Why is little weirdos? Part 3 (drawing and ideas)
I’m still tracing backwards to the source of everything and where I left off was drawings. How to translate drawings and drawing styles into the 3rd dimension and the brief obsession I had with this trying to get other people’s drawing styles translated into 3D physical objects. It had dawned on me that I needed more drawings to pull from for reference. What I hadn’t really clued into yet was it wasn’t the lines and the marks that I was actually trying to reconcile with. Sure, you can think of ways to translate a stroke into a textured surface, but ultimately, no matter what drawing you’re working with the gap between the two mediums has different rules. Plus it was never about just a drawing I wanted to make 3D if that were the case I could just point at any drawing I had done in the past and try to make it 3D. What I was actually chasing was the raw material behind drawings: Ideas.
Here’s the thing, I never really know where ideas come from but drawing seems to be a sort of veil between idea space and real world space. Kind of like writing, although writing feels much more structural and the more ideas cross over into words the more unique ways we have to build thoughts that begets more ideas. Especially when those drawings are not fully formed, like doodles.
I wish I could find this thing I read about a decade ago talking about the age of Aquarius, I don’t remember the exact wording but it was something along the lines of a time where human dreams and ideas would gain consciousness. Clearly this could be construed as A.I. but I think it’s way more than that. The fact that I can just come up with an idea, doodle it, 3D model it, and then 3D print it is sort of magic I can’t fully comprehend still. Memes are another great example of this concept though; ideas want to be alive.
So we’ve arrived at the beginning, DOODLES which are synonymous with ideas. Thus started the little weirdos process: Draw a page of doodles, pick one that resonates, or an idea that desires to live the strongest and make something from that. So what’s next? I think from here I will try to assemble all of this into the mecha I was discussing in Part 1 and start digging into the history and rules I set up for myself and then start making dedicated posts for each little weirdo.
